A devastating car accident resulted in the death of a beloved Miami grandmother as she was on her way home from work. According to local reports, a former University of Miami student was out partying a little too hard one night before getting behind the wheel of her car. She rear ended the 68 year old grandmother in the accident at enough force to take her life, she was traveling at least 80 mph. Police claim that the rear ending caused the trunk of the grandmothers car to be pushed in the passenger glove compartment. When tested, the girls blood alcohol content level was .231, nearly three times the legal limit for a Florida driver. In her car the police found also discovered a fake driver's license and discovered what they believe to be marijuana in a plastic bag on the floor.
Reports share that this young woman was a daughter of an entertainment executive and was a freshman at UM, only 19 years old. She was a resident of a Coral Gables community and just graduated from the local private high school the year prior. As a result of her crime, the young driver originally faced up to 20 years in prison, though the court allowed her to plead guilty to vehicular manslaughter for and spent the next three years in prison for her actions. After that she will be on probation for 15 years and be required to accomplish 1,000 hours of service for the community. During this time, the court requires that she share with the community and talk with young people about the dangers and effects of drunk driving.
The grandmothers family came to the Miami-Dade courtroom to share their sorrows, explaining that the grandma was the glue the kept the family together. Sadly, this woman will never be able to celebrate the recent marriage of her son, or have the chance to watch her granddaughter graduate from the University of Miami's law program. While there is nothing that can be done to replace the loss of their grandmother, the family may decide that they wanted to pursue a wrongful death claim against the driver responsible for their grandmother.
