This morning, a ferry was pulling into port in lower Manhattan when the vessel suddenly struck the dock that it was supposed to park alongside. Within the ferry, hundreds of commuters were jostled off of their feet. Some fell, hitting their heads against the hard deck. Others twisted their ankles or were lurched forward in such a way that it caused back problems. As the catamaran crushed the deck, firefighters and emergency rescue teams came running. Once the boat was moved away from the accident, rescue teams began to rush in, pulling off at least a dozen passengers on stretchers.
One person was seen leaving the scene of the accident in critical condition in an ambulance. Authorities say that this victim received a brain injury and was in desperate need of emergency medical attention. The accident caused significant damage to the boat as well. The outer part of the vessel was ripped open during the accident. The name of the damaged vessel is the Seastreak Wall Street catamaran from Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey. The boat makes regular trips between its home port in New Jersey and its landing place in lower Manhattan.
Many commuters from New Jersey take the ferry to the city in order to get to work. Currently, the Seastreak ferry company does not have any information about how or why the collision occurred.
