Two Ohio nurses were assigned to care for a 14-year-old girl with cerebral palsy. The petit child should have been cared for diligently and faithfully by these two hospital workers, but nothing could be further from the truth. When the child died at the age of 14, she weighed only 28 pounds and was extremely malnourished. The nurses were taken to court and charged with neglect of a patient. While it was within the judge’s rights to sentence them to one and a half years in prison, the nurses were able to emerge from the court house on probation. The women may be on probation for up to 5 years.
Authorities report that the child who died was kept in squalor conditions in the hospital and was constantly neglected. She was not given the nutrition she needed to live a healthy lifestyle. According to investigators, the deceased Makayla Norman was covered in bedsores and was completely malnourished at her death. The nurses pleaded no contest when accused of failing to provide for a functionally impaired child. As part of their sentence, both women are required to give up their nursing licenses and will not be able to practice their occupation in the state of Ohio any longer. They also face misdemeanor charges for their crime in another court and may be given jail time at that heading.
The nurse’s attorneys say that they did not have a significant role in the teen’s death, and that Makayla’s mother is at fault for the tragedy. Her mother was sentenced to nine years in prison because of the death and her involvement in the child’s poor care. The mom was supposed to administer care to her child six days a week, but would fail in her duties consistently. If your loved one was malnourished and has fallen ill or died as a result, then you have the right to seek compensation from that person. Contact a Miami personal injury attorney at the
