People often joke that they would like an IV of coffee in order to function on the caffeine source, but recently a nurse in Brazil took the concept literally, and it proved to be a disaster. According to Fox News, an 80-year-old patient died in her bed at the Rio de Janeiro clinic in Brazil after nurse accidentally injected coffee into her veins. The nurse, a 23-year-old student, says that anyone can get confused when it comes to IV drips. The woman, Rejane Telles, told the news stations that she had only three days of experience at the clinic when the incident happened.
She unintentionally hooked the 80 year old up to an IV drip that was filled with coffee and milk. The woman died only an hour after the fluid was coursing through her body. The Medical Daily reports that Telles knew of the risks before she administered the coffee. She said that she hadn’t been trained in the procedure, so she doesn’t believe that she is entirely at fault for the mistake. Telles says that the food and blood drips were right next to each other. She accidentally injected the feeding IV into the wrong place, pumping coffee into the woman’s veins.
Telles has been indicted for manslaughter for the incident alone with two other nurses and a student. The coffee travelled directly to the patient’s heart and lungs, causing a painful death. The woman seemed uncomfortable when she opened her mouth to express some concerns. Her daughter says that the nurse put half a glass of coffee into her mother’s body, and is now paying the price for her negligence.
